Four Routes to BCBA Become Two. Apply by December 31 to Keep Today’s Rules.
Two pathways replace four on January 1, 2027. A complete application received by December 31, 2026 is judged under the current rules — and one of the two surviving pathways closes in 2032.
The BACB has published its 2027 BCBA requirements, and the headline is a narrowing: from January 1, 2027, candidates may apply through one of two pathways, where four exist today.
The cutoff is not the exam. It is the application. In the BACB's words, to be assessed under the current 2022 requirements "your complete application (including payment and all required documents) must be received by December 31, 2026." Complete means complete — payment and every document. Anyone submitting on or after January 1, 2027 is assessed under the new requirements in full.
What the two pathways are
- Pathway 1 — Accredited or Recognized Program. A master's degree or higher obtained while the program was accredited by the APBA, or a master's or doctoral degree earned in 2015 or later from a program accredited or recognized by ABAI under Tier 1, 2a, or 2b. The BACB's own example: a master's earned in 2018 from a program accredited from 2016 to 2022 qualifies.
- Pathway 2 — Behavior-Analytic Coursework. A master's degree or higher in any field, plus behavior-analytic coursework.
Both pathways require practical fieldwork in applied behavior analysis, accrued as Supervised Fieldwork, Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, or both, with the detail set out in the BCBA Handbook.
The change after the change
A footnote in the requirements document carries the more consequential news. It directs readers to the recent and upcoming changes page for requirements taking effect after 2027, "such as the 2032 removal of pathway 2 for BCBA certification."
Read that plainly: the route that accepts a master's degree in any field plus coursework is scheduled to disappear. From 2032, eligibility runs through an accredited or recognized behavior-analytic degree program. That is not a documentation change. It decides which graduate programs can produce a BCBA at all, and it lands on a workforce where credentialing evidence is already being demanded more insistently by payers.
What you must know or do
If you or anyone you supervise is close to eligible, work backwards from December 31, 2026, not toward it. A complete application needs transcripts, verified fieldwork documentation, and payment in hand. Institutions take weeks to produce transcripts and fieldwork verification is the step candidates most often discover is incomplete. Pick the date you will submit, then count back.
If you supervise trainees, check which pathway each one is actually on. Candidates on the routes being eliminated need to know now, while there is still time to submit under the current rules, rather than in December when the queue forms.
If you run or advise on a graduate program, the 2032 date is the planning horizon. A program that is not accredited or recognized stops being a route to certification, and 2032 is close enough that students enrolling in the next few years are affected by the answer.
