A Component Functional Analysis Predicted the Multielement FA's Results

The field has spent a decade arguing whether to assess isolated or synthesized contingencies. A study in the Fall 2026 Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis tests a single analysis that evaluates both — and its predictions matched the longer assessment for eight participants.

The isolated-versus-synthesized argument has run long enough that most practitioners have picked a side and stopped reading. Bann and Morris, at Louisiana State University, published something in the Fall 2026 Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis that does not require you to pick.

Their premise is a gap, stated plainly: both isolated and synthesized reinforcement contingencies are established influences on challenging behavior, but “currently no method exists for simultaneously evaluating these different causal variables.”

What they built

A component functional analysis: sequentially introduced establishing operations to test evocative effects, then sequentially delivered consequences to test reinforcement effects, inside one assessment. They then ran a conventional multielement FA — isolated functions, plus synthesized functions where indicated — and compared what each concluded.

The findings

  • The component FA's results were “highly predictive” of the multielement FA's.
  • Function was accurately predicted for six participants with isolated functions and two with synthesized functions.
  • For one participant whose multielement FA came back undifferentiated, the component FA showed high specificity — which is the case that usually costs the most assessment time.

The authors' own claim is deliberately modest: the results provide “initial support for the component FA as a precise and efficient method of identifying both isolated and synthesized social functions of behavior.” Initial support, not a replacement.

The limits

This is a small comparison study, and the authors frame it as a first test rather than a validation. Accurate prediction against a multielement FA is agreement with another assessment, not proof against treatment outcome — the question of whether component-FA-derived treatments work as well is not one this paper answers. And the participant whose multielement FA was undifferentiated is a single case, which is where the method looks most useful and is least evidenced.

Why the timing matters

Assessment time is authorized time. Virginia now applies a 20-hour weekly cumulative limit, South Carolina makes 97151 recoupable if treatment does not begin within a month of the assessment, and the CMS toolkit pushes states toward tighter utilization review. In that environment the cost of an FA is not only clinical — an assessment that reaches the same conclusion in fewer sessions leaves more of the authorization for treatment.

There is a second reason to care. When a payer or a reviewer asks why a treatment targets the function it does, “our FA said so” is a stronger answer when the analysis tested the alternative rather than assumed it away. A method that evaluates isolated and synthesized contingencies in one pass produces exactly that record.

What you must know or do

  • Clinical directors: read the method section before adopting anything. This is one study with initial support, and the useful move now is knowing it exists, not switching your assessment protocol on the strength of it.
  • Anyone running FAs: pull your last five undifferentiated FAs and count the sessions each consumed. That number is what this method claims to reduce, and it tells you whether the problem is big enough in your practice to be worth watching.
  • If you have taken a side in the isolated-versus-synthesized argument: note that the comparison here is against a multielement FA that included synthesized conditions where indicated — the study does not treat either approach as the default, and neither should a treatment plan that has to survive review.
  • Owners: nothing to change this week. Watch for replication, and for anyone selling a shortened FA protocol on the strength of a single paper — the authors did not claim that and you should not buy it.
