Trainees Hit DTI Mastery by Scoring Videos — No Modeling, Rehearsal or Feedback

Fifteen undergraduates watched video models of discrete-trial instruction and scored them against a procedural fidelity checklist. Just under three quarters reached mastery on the trained skill, and just under half generalized to two untrained ones.

Behavior skills training works, and it is expensive: someone has to model, someone has to watch the rehearsal, someone has to deliver the feedback. McKeown, Williams, Quintero-Giegeling and Vollmer, in the Fall 2026 Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, tested how much of that a trainee can skip.

What they did

Fifteen undergraduate students were assessed on implementing three discrete-trial instruction skills — matching, imitation and listener responding — after written instructions alone. They then received asynchronous online training in which they scored video models of DTI implementation using a procedural fidelity checklist. No in vivo modeling, no rehearsal, no feedback. A multiple-baseline design across participants evaluated efficacy and generalization.

The numbers

  • After scoring a matching video, 73.33% of participants (11 of 15) met mastery criteria for implementing matching.
  • 46.67% (7 of 15) generalized to imitation and listener responding — skills they were never trained on.

Observation alone produced improvements in procedural fidelity, and for most participants produced mastery without any of the components that make behavior skills training costly to deliver.

The limits, in the authors' terms

The participants were undergraduate students, not new hires with a caseload, and the setting was training rather than delivery to early intervention clients over time. Mastery of matching is one skill; a quarter of participants didn't reach it, and a majority didn't generalize. The authors frame the result as support for observer-effect training “as an efficient method for establishing high-fidelity DTI implementation” — efficient, not sufficient, and there is no maintenance data here.

Why this is worth your time this year

The BACB's 2026 RBT requirements raised the bar on the 40-hour training — content aligned to the 3rd edition task list, minimum durations per section, half the hours in Domain E. That is a real cost, and it lands in a year when practices are absorbing rate cuts and states are writing credentialing deadlines into their manuals. South Carolina gives a behavior technician a one-time 90-day grace period from their first service to acquire the RBT credential, and North Carolina put a certification requirement on existing paraprofessionals this month.

Asynchronous checklist-scoring is the cheapest thing in the training literature, and it costs a supervisor nothing per trainee after the videos exist. If it gets three quarters of people to mastery on the trained skill, it is the front half of a training sequence, with in vivo time reserved for the quarter who need it.

What you must know or do

  • Whoever runs your onboarding: record three video models of your own DTI protocols and build the fidelity checklist trainees will score them against. That is a one-off afternoon that every subsequent hire uses.
  • Supervising BCBAs: put the scoring exercise before in vivo rehearsal, not instead of it, and use the post-scoring fidelity probe to decide who needs the rehearsal. This study says roughly one in four will.
  • Don't assume generalization. Under half generalized to untrained skills, so probe each skill you care about rather than training one and inferring the rest.
  • Owners: the finding is about establishing fidelity, not maintaining it. Pair this with a scheduled fidelity check on the floor — which is the same data you need for the supervision documentation payers are now reviewing.
