MaineCare's ABA Cohort Revalidates From April 19, 2027. Claims Pend at Day 60
Maine's off-cycle revalidation plan puts 29 providers in its 'Adaptive Behavior Services for Children' cohort. Letters go out January to March. Miss day 60 and claims pend; miss day 90 and enrollment ends.
MaineCare has published the provider-by-provider schedule for its federally required off-cycle revalidation. Cohort 4, "Adaptive Behavior Services for Children," lists 29 NPIs, and each one's window opens on April 19, 2027. Advance letters are planned for January through March 2027. The process has already started for the first cohorts: their claims-pend deadline passed on October 16, and their termination deadline is November 15.
Maine is answering the same April 23 CMS letter as every other state (see South Carolina and Utah). What's useful about Maine is that the list is public now, so you can check your NPI six months before the window opens.
The rule, from MaineCare's first report to CMS
- "Providers must submit a revalidation case within 90 days after the opening of the revalidation period."
- "If a provider fails to submit a case within 60 days, (OMS) will pend all claims submitted by that provider until the provider submits its revalidation case."
- At 90 days without a case, "OMS will terminate that provider's enrollment in MaineCare."
- Counting from April 19, 2027, day 60 is June 18, 2027 and day 90 is July 18, 2027.
- MaineCare's Q&A says the dates can't be changed on request.
Check which cohort you're in
Cohort 4 is built from enrollment types: early childhood providers, intermediate education units, children's community rehabilitation providers and special purpose private schools. Clinicians enrolled as behavioral health clinicians, or in clinician groups, sit in Cohort 5, which opens in waves from May 17 to December 20, 2027. Providers who enrolled or revalidated between May 2025 and May 2026, or whose regular date falls between May 2026 and April 2028, aren't on the off-cycle list. The plan notes that its timeline "is subject to change."
This sits alongside Maine's Section 28 staff-certification deadline, a separate requirement.
What to do
- Owner or credentialing lead, this week: search MaineCare's Cohort Breakdown PDF for your group NPI and each enrolled clinician's NPI, and write down each cohort and date.
- If you're not listed: confirm your last enrollment or revalidation date falls in one of the exempt ranges. If it doesn't, ask MaineCare provider enrollment why.
- Before January: make sure the mailing address and portal login on file are current, since the advance notice is a letter.
- Calendar now: April 19 (open), June 18 (claims pend) and July 18, 2027 (termination). Set your own deadline at day 30.
