Every Pennsylvania Behavior Specialist License Expires December 31
Renewal needs two hours of approved child-abuse training and $75. IBHS agencies that qualify clinical directors or ABA consultants through this license have the most to lose.
Pennsylvania doesn't license behavior analysts. It licenses behavior specialists, and under 49 Pa. Code § 18.525 every one of those licenses "expires on December 31 of the even-numbered year." That's December 31, 2026, 69 days from this article.
For an individual clinician this is routine. For an IBHS agency it's a staffing question. The IBHS regulations (55 Pa. Code § 5240.81) list the behavior specialist license as a route to qualify as a clinical director and as behavior consultant-ABA staff, and tie assistant behavior consultant qualifications to it. A lapsed license can leave a filled position unqualified on January 1.
What renewal takes
- Training: at least 2 hours of Board-approved continuing education in child abuse recognition and reporting.
- Fee: $75.
- Notice: the State Board of Medicine "emails renewal notices approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date," so around November 1.

What you must know or do
- IBHS owners and HR leads: list every clinical director, behavior consultant-ABA and assistant behavior consultant whose qualification runs through this license. Note who else on the list qualifies another way.
- Each licensee: book the 2-hour child-abuse course now, with a Board-approved provider. Don't leave it for the last week of December.
- Owners: check that the email address on each license is current, since that's where the notice goes. Set a December 15 check that every renewal shows complete.
